SPECIAL NOTES
Engineering Note
In 1996, the screws listed by UL were tested in plate steel that measured .188
and. 118. Subsequent testing was done for purlin applications on May 5, 1997
using .037 or 20 gauge steel.
Metric Sizes
Sammy Super Screw® and Sidewinders™ are available to hang metric threaded rod
(6mm, 8mm, and 10mm) or bolt stock.

Recommended Safe Load
Pullouts listed are average actual pullouts and should be used as reference only
for calculations of acceptable pullout and shear values. Values are ultimate
averages achieved under laboratory conditions and apply to fasteners
manufactured by Speedy Products, Inc. only. In the process of doing engineering,
design personnel should divide by the recommended safe load average per the
industry requirement. See Tables safe load calculation.
Sammy Nut Drivers
Special nut drivers were designed to be used with the Sammy Super Screw®
anchoring system. When the appropriate nut drivers are used for installation the
driver spins free on the screw after installation is complete and eliminates the
expected wrist snap, reduces over-torquing, and prevents screw failure. See
product-specific installation procedures also available in individual sections
of our product catalog.
Stainless Steel Screws
All screws are available with stainless steel caps by special order. For screws
manufactured with both stainless steel screw and cap, please see the catalog.
Steel Screws
Because of variations in the hardness of certain metals, it should be noted that
our self-drilling screws for steel will experience different drill rates. 1300
(±200) RPM is considered optimal drill speed. Residual drill chips should not be
blue in color. Residual drill chips that are blue in color indicate that the
drill RPM level is too high.
Composite Joist
Truss manufacturers vary installation recommendations for composite joist. Sidewinder
SWG 20
and SWG 25-380 can be installed into the top cord of a truss. A GST 20 can be
installed into the center of the lower cord of a composite joist. Penetration of the upright
center web is permitted by some joist manufacturers.
Pre-drilling may be required by
joist manufacturers. If so, pre-drill pilot 1/8"
smaller than root diameter of fastener. Consult table below:

To increase efficiency of the installation process, sleeve
tools, bit receivers and wood bits are available for pre-drilling.
Note: On November 27, 1995, tests were conducted
for the Sammy GST 20 installed in the vertical position, dead center into the
lower composite truss face. Achieved pullout was 1144#. No pre-drilling was done.
The second screw tested was the Sidewinder SWG 20 installed into the side of the
top cord of the composite joist. A maximum shear value of 1095# was achieved. No
pre-drilling was done.
See individual screws for
product-specific information and diagrams.
